Volvo’s stalwart three-row SUV, the mid-size XC90 has been going strong for a decade. While the 2025 version will get a mid-year refresher, underneath, the 2025.5 will be very similar to both the 2024 and 2025 early models, getting only light upgrades. While many competitors have made full-scale changes – and some haven’t been on the market for the entirety of the second-generation XC 90 models – the 2025 Volvo XC90 continues to demonstrate that sometimes you just need to keep going with what works!

Two mild hybrid engines and one plug-in hybrid are offered under the hood of the 2025 Volvo XC90. The base engine – referred to as the B5 – is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine partnered with a 48-volt hybrid system, to help out with fuel economy. Putting down 247 horsepower, it gets 23 MPG city and 30 MPG highway. The B6 powertrain steps up to 297 horsepower from the same pairing, although this drops the fuel economy to 20 MPG city and 26 MPG highway. Both of these are paired with standard all-wheel drive and an eight-speed transmission. The plug-in hybrid T8 powertrain also comes with all-wheel drive and the eight-speed and puts out 27 MPG combined. Its powerful, putting out 455 horsepower, and can get up to 60 miles per hour in only 4.5 seconds. It comes with a standard charger, which can take five hours or longer to provide the full electric charge to achieve the 36-mile all-electric range.

The 2025 Volvo XC90 features a wide, boxy body that makes the most of its footprint. It’s a simple, understated, European luxury look, a characteristic that is shown inside as well, where anywhere from five to seven passengers sit in an upscale blend of upscale luxury and modern design. Trim options include matte wood for ambiance, and clean lines throughout. 

Full-sized adults will be fine in the second row, which offers 37 inches of leg room and 38.5 inches of headroom. The third row is reserved for children though, with 31.9 inches of leg room and 36.3 inches of headroom. There’s 12.6 cubic feet of space for cargo behind the third row, enough for small shopping trips and carpooling to school. This expands up to 35.6 cubic feet with the third row folded down, and 65.5 cubic feet with both the second and third rows stowed.

The infotainment system is the big difference in the mid-year updates. The 2025 models get a 9.0-inch touchscreen as standard, while the 2025.5 models get a new 11.2-inch display. The software interface is compatible with Android Auto, while Apple CarPlay integration is standard. Navigation is also standard, and Google Assistant is included. The base audio system has 10 speakers and a 220-watt amplifier. Two upgraded audio systems are offered – a 14-speaker harman/kardon system, and a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins hi-fi system with 15 channels and a fresh air subwoofer. Every model comes with two or more USB ports, satellite radio, and Qi-Compatible wireless device charging. 

Volvo has long been recognized for its safety, and the 2025 Volvo XC90 is no different. Standard driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, traffic-sign recognition, forward collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, forward automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and automatic high-beam headlights. A rearview camera and front and rear parking sensors are standard; a surround-view camera and side parking sensors are available.

With the mid-year update and three different powertrains, there are 18 total iterations possible for a new XC90, although in reality, there are only three individual trim levels.

The Core features the standards mentioned above, sitting on 20-inch 10-spoke Black Diamond cut alloy wheels, with aluminum roof rails and a panoramic moonroof overhead. A four-zone climate system includes third-row air conditioning inside, where synthetic leather wraps the seating. Both front seats are power-adjustable and heated, while the driver seat includes memory settings. Heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel are available to battle cold weather, while illuminated running boards are optional for easier entry and exit.

The mid-range Plus trim builds on this by upgrading the interior trim to refined Linear Walnut, elevating the upholstery to genuine leather, and making the heated rear seats and heated steering wheel standard. Interior illumination, illuminated side moldings, and exclusive textile floor mats help to upgrade the luxury feel. Safety is upgraded with the surround-view camera, while headlights cleaners are also included for excellent vision in the dark and rain.

Top-level Ultimate trim models get ventilated front seats, which are wrapped in Nappa leather. The passenger seat also gets memory setting at this level. Passengers are surrounded with Gray Ash décor and tailored dashboard and door top panels, all topped with a crystal gear selector knob. The 14-speaker harman/kardon sound system is standard, with the Bowers & Wilkins unit available. The Ultimate sits on 21-inch 8-mult spoke Black Diamond cut alloy wheels.
