As electric vehicles continue to emerge as the future of driving, carmakers are evolving to bring them inline with traditional offerings, both in contents and in naming. The Volvo C40 Recharge was introduced in 2021 as sleek alternative to the boxier XC40 Recharge SUV, combining the modern electric power with a sporty look. For the latest model year, the C40 has been rebranded as the 2025 Volvo EC40, but gets limited upgrades to go with the new name. 

The fully electric powertrain in the 2025 Volvo EC40 is available in a single-motor, rear-wheel drive version and a twin-motor all-wheel drive version. With the single motor, the powertrain lays down 248 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, providing crisp acceleration and efficient performance. The twin-motor version gets an upgrade to a combined output of 434 horsepower with the two motors, along with 494 lb-ft of torque. It’s also the more performance-oriented version and can go from 0 to 60 MPH in 4.5 seconds.

The single motor version gets a bigger battery than the twin motor, meaning that while it has reduced power, it gets better range. With a single motor, the EC40 gets a maximum range of 297 miles, and the battery charges from 10% to 80% in only 28 minutes using a DC fast charger. With twin motors, the range is reduced to 257 miles, and on the DC fast charger it takes roughly 37 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%.

Sporty, with an aggressive front end and a long curving roofline, the 2025 Volvo EC40 cuts a sleek profile. It sits on standard 19-inch alloy wheels, with larger 20-inch alloy wheels and black-painted 20-inch wheels available. 

Seating for five includes plenty of space for front seat passengers, while the rear seat is somewhat limited due to the sloping roofline and standard panoramic fixed roof. Passengers in the back get 36.1 inches of legroom, while the headroom is limited to 36.7 inches. With all seats in place, the short rear end and continued roof slop provides for 14.6 cubic feet of storage in the back, enough for small errands. This expands up to 40 cubic seats with the second row stowed.

An 9.30- inch infotainment touch screen is at the heart of the dashboard, connected to an 8-speaker audio system with Apple CarPlay and the Google Digital Services suite standard. Navigation is standard, along with voice recognition, while four USB ports provide charging and media connection. Drivers looking for high-quality audio can upgrade to the 13-speaker harman/kardon sound system.

Plenty of driver assistance features are provided at the base level of the 2025 Volvo EC40. These include Standard driver-assistance features include a rearview camera, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic-sign recognition and rear parking sensors. A surround-view camera system and front and side parking sensors are optional, as is Pilot Assist, which is paired with adaptive cruise control.

Three trim levels plus the Black Edition appearance package feature on the 2025 Volvo EC40, and they are all available with single or twin electric motors.

The Core trim is clad in basic cloth, and heated front seats are standard. On top of the features mentioned above, dual-zone automatic climate control is standard, and keyless entry makes it easy to get in and get going. The available Climate package adds a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, headlight cleaners and a heat pump to extend the battery range in cold-weather conditions. 

Stepping up to the Plus trim, the interior is upgraded to simulated suede upholstery. The front passenger seat gets power-adjustability, as do the rear headrests. The Climate package remains an option. The Black Edition can be added on top of the Plus trim and is purely an appearance package, with Onyx Black paint, blackened badges, and gloss black 20-inch alloy wheels.

The top-level Ultimate trim gets wool fabric upholstery covering seating, and the Climate package is standard. On top of the 13-speaker audio system, the Ultimate trim features ambient LED interior lighting for notes of luxury. This trim features standard 20-inch alloy wheels, while Pilot Assist with adaptive cruise control is also standard for semi-autonomous driving.
